Why ALL COTTON construction?
In August 2020, Duke researchers rated a fitted N95 mask, a three-layer surgical mask and a cotton-polypropylene-cotton mask as the top protectors against COVID-19. Researchers also report that high-thread count fabrics (like 600 TCI Pima cotton) act as a mechanical barrier to aerosols, while fabrics that hold a static charge (like some chiffon, silks, and poly blends) can serve as an electrostatic barrier. ALL Ad Tumulum masks use 100% Pima Cotton.
Researchers say a tight-weave 100% cotton is a very good choice. That’s because at the microscopic level, the natural fibers in cotton tend to have more three-dimensional structure than synthetic fibers, which are smoother, says Christopher Zangmeister, a researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. That 3D structure can create more roadblocks that can stop an incoming particle, he explains.
Zangmeister co-authored a new study in ACS Nano that tested how well dozens of different materials filtered — most synthetics ranked near the bottom, he says. Polyester woven fabrics can retain more static charge compared to natural fibers or cotton due to their lower water adsorption properties
Why are MERV-13 filters better?
The CDC and ASHRAE recommend MERV 13 filters in hospitals, schools, buildings and homes. Designed for superior filtration efficiency, MERV-13 filters are made with electrostatically charged synthetic material that draws and captures allergens between 0.3 – 1.0 microns, including lint, dust mites, mold spores, pollen, pet dander, fine dust, smoke, viruses, and bacteria.
MERV-13 filters are in very high demand right now as the WORLD tries to keep the virus at bay. Once the GOLD STANDARD, now the baseline for health and safety in hospitals, restaurants, department stores – pretty much anywhere wanting to provide basic services now. All Ad Tumulum face masks have MERV-13 filter sewn in. As mentioned, these are quite difficult to order now, but I won’t make or sell a mask without it. For my safety and yours.

Does Size matter?
Fit is key! Even a one-per-cent gap in a mask reduces the filtering efficiency of all masks by 60 per cent or more. It’s important to wash masks after every use to avoid cross-contamination, as well, so having more than one is useful.
I offer three sizes because comfort is also security – the better a mask fits, the less aerosolized particulate matter can slip thru gaps and puckers. I wear the Large, which gives total beard coverage.
